The formulas
By followers
(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ posts ÷ followers × 100
Works from any public profile. The standard number brands quote.
By reach
(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ posts ÷ (reach ÷ posts) × 100
Needs the creator’s Insights. Shows how people who saw the posts responded.

Beyond engagement rate
Engagement rate tells you how an audience responds today. It does not tell you who is about to break out. INFLU scores every fashion post on Instagram for viral momentum and labels each creator’s phase, so you can find creators while they are still rising.
FAQ
How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?
Add up the likes and comments (plus saves and shares if you have them) on a set of recent posts, divide by the number of posts to get interactions per post, then divide by the follower count and multiply by 100. That is engagement rate by followers.
What is the difference between engagement rate by followers and by reach?
By followers divides by audience size, so anyone can compute it from a public profile. By reach divides by how many accounts actually saw each post, which needs the creator’s Instagram Insights. Reach-based rates run higher because reach is usually smaller than the follower count.
How many posts should I include?
Use the last 9 to 12 feed posts and leave out anything pinned or boosted with ads. Fewer posts let one viral outlier skew the result; many more mixes in content from a different season of the account.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
It depends on account size and niche: smaller accounts usually post higher rates than large ones. Compare an account with creators of a similar size in the same niche rather than against one universal number. INFLU’s public leaderboards rank fashion creators by momentum within each subcategory for exactly that reason.
Does engagement rate tell me whether a creator is growing?
Not on its own. It is a snapshot of how an audience responds today. Momentum, meaning whether a creator’s posts are outperforming their own recent baseline, is the better early signal, and it is what INFLU’s viral score and momentum phases measure.
